# Tavily vs. Parallel: choosing a search API for your AI agent

Tavily and Parallel both return structured JSON built for LLMs. Parallel's default for the agent job is Fast, at $1 per 1,000 requests and ~700ms, and on a Fast-mode stack search accounts for under 12% of end-to-end cost against 68% with Tavily Basic, which works out to 2.79x cheaper end to end. What follows covers how each one thinks about search, what you get back, capabilities beyond basic search, source control, developer experience, pricing, rate limits, and enterprise considerations.

## **How they think about search**

You send Tavily a query, pick a depth (basic, fast, advanced, or ultra-fast), and get back ranked results with optional raw content, images, and an LLM-generated answer. Search here is a utility, and the interface mirrors traditional search: keyword in, links and snippets out. Tavily also offers a Hybrid RAG client that merges live web results with your local MongoDB vector database, which is worth having if you already run a retrieval pipeline and want to augment it with fresh data.

Parallel built its Search API on a proprietary web index and optimized it for a different input: a natural-language objective. Instead of sending keywords, you describe what your agent needs to accomplish, and the API returns ranked URLs with compressed, token-dense excerpts you can feed straight into a model's context window. Keyword queries can supplement the objective, but the default workflow assumes your agent thinks in goals.

## **What you get back**

Tavily returns what a traditional search engine returns, repackaged for programmatic use: URL, title, snippet, relevance score. Toggle on include_answer for an LLM-generated summary, include_raw_content for full page text in markdown or plain text, and include_images for visual content. The shape of the response reflects its heritage as a search engine modeled on how humans browse the web, with an API wrapper and LLM conveniences layered on top, which makes it familiar territory if you already work in the Google/Bing mental model.

Parallel starts somewhere else. Results are dense excerpts engineered for a model's context window: each one carries a URL, title, publish date, and compressed text pulled from the page, aligned to the objective you sent. Excerpt length is yours to set with max_chars_per_result and max_chars_total, which is how you tune the share of your token budget going to retrieval versus reasoning, with the aim of handing the model the highest-signal slice of the web for its task in the fewest tokens possible.

The difference shows up at the platform level too. Tavily is a search API, a tool your agent calls when it needs web data. Parallel is closer to a full-stack agentic web platform: Search and Extract handle retrieval, and Task, Responses, FindAll, Entity Search, and Monitor layer on top of the same retrieval foundation. The Search API is one function of infrastructure built for agents that research, reason, and act on the web.

## **Beyond basic search**

Both platforms offer more than a search endpoint.

Tavily provides /extract for pulling clean content from URLs, up to 20 at once, /map for discovering site structure and generating sitemaps, /crawl for combining mapping with content extraction, and /research for deep, multi-step investigations. Research runs on dynamic pricing with three model options (mini, pro, and auto), and it can return structured output conforming to a JSON Schema you provide.

Parallel's API surface is broader. The Search API handles synchronous lookups. The Task API runs asynchronous deep research across a range of Processors, from Lite to Ultra8x, that trade speed for depth, while the Responses API delivers the same research quality through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint for latency-sensitive use cases. The Extract API converts JavaScript-heavy pages and PDFs into clean markdown, FindAll discovers entities across the web matching your criteria, Entity Search returns structured company matches in real time, and Monitor watches for changes over time.

The Task API is where Parallel differentiates most. Define a structured output schema and processors will cite sources, provide reasoning, assign confidence scores, and return relevant excerpts for each field, which is what makes enrichment workflows, competitive analysis, and database augmentation practical at scale.

## **Source control**

Tavily gives you domain filtering (include/exclude lists), topic scoping (general or news), time range filtering with start and end dates, and country-based results.

Parallel's Source Policy works across both the Search and Task APIs. You specify include_domains, exclude_domains, and an after_date for freshness constraints. The Search API adds a fetch_policy that controls whether you get indexed content or force a live fetch, with configurable cache TTLs, which is what an agent needs when it has to stay inside a list of approved domains or guarantee recency.

Both integrate with LangChain: Tavily ships a TavilySearchResults tool, and Parallel ships ParallelWebSearchTool via the langchain-parallel package. Both also offer MCP server support for agent frameworks.

## **Pricing model**

Tavily uses a credit system: a basic search costs 1 credit, advanced costs 2, and the free tier gives you 1,000 credits per month. Paid plans range from $30/month for 4,000 credits (Project) through $100/month for 15,000 (Bootstrap), $220/month for 38,000 (Startup), and $500/month for 100,000 (Growth). Pay-as-you-go runs $0.008 per credit. Research requests use dynamic pricing, 4 to 110 credits per request on the mini model and 15 to 250 on pro.

Parallel charges per request, with pricing tied to the API product. Search API requests cost $1 per 1,000 ($0.001 each) in Fast at ~700ms or Turbo, or $5 per 1,000 ($0.005 each) for Basic and Advanced (10 results included). Task API requests range from $0.005 (Lite) to $2.40 (Ultra8x) depending on how deep you need the research to go, and Extract costs $0.001 per request. There is no credit system and no monthly plan to manage; you pay for what you use.

## **Rate limits**

Tavily sets rate limits by environment: 100 requests per minute on development keys, 1,000 on production keys. The crawl endpoint caps at 100 RPM in both environments, and research at 20 RPM.

Parallel sets limits per API product: 600/min for Search and Extract, 2,000/min for Tasks, 300/min for Monitor, and 300/hour for FindAll. GET requests such as polling and status checks don't count against the limits, and custom limits are available for enterprise use cases.

## **Enterprise considerations**

Tavily holds SOC 2 Type II certification, offers GDPR-aligned data handling with Standard Contractual Clauses for EU data transfers, and maintains a trust center powered by Vanta. In February 2026, Nebius (the Amsterdam-headquartered successor to Yandex's non-Russian assets) announced an agreement to acquire Tavily, and Tavily says the API, data policies, and zero-data-retention commitments remain unchanged under the new ownership.

Parallel holds SOC 2 Type 2 certification, offers a Data Processing Addendum and zero data retention, commits contractually to not training on customer data, and maintains a public status page and trust center.

## **When to use each**

Tavily works well when what you need is a straightforward search tool for an existing agent pipeline. The credit-based pricing is predictable, the Hybrid RAG client adds real value if you're already running a MongoDB vector store, and the free tier lets you prototype without commitment. The Nebius acquisition also gives Tavily access to global cloud infrastructure, which could improve latency and uptime over time.

Parallel works well when your agent needs to do more than search. If you're running structured research workflows, enriching databases, monitoring the web for changes, or building agents that need high-accuracy results with source citations and confidence scores, the broader API surface and processor tiers give you room to scale the depth and cost of each request to match the task. Fast is the default for most agents at $1 per 1,000 requests and ~700ms, with Turbo at the latency extreme at ~200ms. Third-party numbers now back the quality claim: on the independent Artificial Analysis Search Index (August 2026), Parallel Search (advanced) leads at 75 and all four Parallel modes scored 67 or better, with fast and turbo recording the two lowest search costs of the 15 products tested. Tavily is not among the products that index currently displays, so there is no independent head-to-head to cite.

Both APIs solve the same core problem: getting useful web data into your AI application. The right choice depends on how much you need beyond basic search and whether quality is a primary concern. When factual accuracy is most important, nothing beats Parallel.
