# The best Firecrawl alternatives in 2026

Firecrawl alternatives make sense when you only use part of its stack, or when you need a different license, price, or unblocking rate. This guide covers nine alternatives grouped by the job they replace, a pricing table checked October 10, 2026, a tested migration from Firecrawl search to Parallel Search, and how to choose.

Firecrawl is an open-source web data API, licensed AGPL-3.0, with endpoints for search, scrape, crawl, map, structured JSON extraction, browser interaction, parsing, and monitoring, all billed from one credit balance. A scrape costs 1 credit per page and a search costs 2 credits per 10 results. The free plan includes 1,000 credits a month with no card, and a keyless tier lets agents search, scrape, and parse with no account at all. Most teams looking for a Firecrawl alternative only use one or two of those jobs, so the right replacement depends on which job you’re moving.

We make Parallel, which appears on this list, and we’ve tried to keep the comparison fair. Every price below comes from the vendor’s own pricing page or docs, checked on October 10, 2026.

## What Firecrawl does well

Firecrawl earns its popularity. The [GitHub repository](https://github.com/firecrawl/firecrawl) has more than 180,000 stars, and you can [self-host it](https://docs.firecrawl.dev/contributing/self-host) with Docker Compose. Its [keyless MCP server](https://docs.firecrawl.dev/mcp-server/keyless-api-key) at `https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp` exposes search, scrape, and parse with no credential, and we confirmed that its REST search endpoint also answers without a key. On search quality, Firecrawl scored 73 on the [Artificial Analysis Search Index](https://artificialanalysis.ai/agents/search-api) (October 2026), close to Exa auto at 74 and Parallel advanced at 75.

The tradeoffs show up at the edges. Keyless limits are shared per IP address per day, the self-hosted build leaves out Fire-engine anti-bot handling, screenshots, and the Agent and Browser features, and the AGPL license matters if you modify and serve the code. Credits don’t roll over on Hobby, Standard, or Growth plans.

## Search and scrape for agents

If your agent calls Firecrawl’s `/search` and then scrapes the top results, you want a search API that returns model-ready text in the first call.

### Parallel

Parallel Search takes a natural-language objective plus keyword queries and returns ranked URLs with excerpts already compressed for a context window, so many agents skip the separate scrape step. Turbo and Fast cost $1 per 1,000 requests with 10 results, and Basic and Advanced cost $5. When you need a full page, [Extract](https://docs.parallel.ai/extract/extract-quickstart) costs $1 per 1,000 URLs. The free [Search MCP](https://docs.parallel.ai/integrations/mcp/search-mcp) at `https://search.parallel.ai/mcp` needs no API key and exposes `web_search` and `web_fetch`, the closest match to Firecrawl’s keyless MCP. Parallel has no crawl, map, or browser interaction endpoint, so keep a crawler if you depend on those. See [pricing](https://parallel.ai/pricing) and our [Firecrawl vs. Parallel comparison](https://parallel.ai/articles/firecrawl-vs-parallel).

**Best for:** agents that search, read, and cite, where cost per call and context size matter.

### Exa

Exa runs its own embeddings-based index and returns page text and highlights with results. [Pricing](https://exa.ai/pricing) is $4 per 1,000 for Instant, $7 for Fast or Auto, and $12 to $15 for Deep search, each with up to 10 results. Contents costs $1 per 1,000 pages, and Monitors cost $15 per 1,000. The free tier gives $10 a month with no card. Exa doesn’t crawl whole sites.

**Best for:** semantic and similarity search, and research agents that want an index-first API.

### Tavily

Tavily is the only search API here with its own [Crawl and Map endpoints](https://docs.tavily.com/documentation/api-credits). A basic search costs 1 credit, an advanced search 2, and every 5 successful extractions cost 1 credit. Crawling 10 pages with basic extraction costs 3 credits. Credits cost $0.008 on pay-as-you-go and $0.005 to $0.0075 on plans from $30 to $500 a month. Tavily is now owned by Nebius; our [Tavily alternatives guide](https://parallel.ai/articles/tavily-alternatives) covers what that means.

**Best for:** teams that want search and light crawling from one vendor.

## Scraping and unblocking at scale

If you use Firecrawl mainly to get past bot protection on specific sites, a dedicated unblocker usually costs less per page and fails less often. These tools return raw HTML, so you’ll handle markdown conversion yourself. Our guide to [web scraping vs. a search API](https://parallel.ai/articles/web-scraping-vs-search-api) explains when you need one at all.

### Bright Data

Bright Data’s [unblocking API](https://brightdata.com/pricing/web-unlocker) costs $1.50 per 1,000 requests on pay-as-you-go, charges only for successful requests, and drops to $1.30 per 1,000 above the 383,000 requests included in its $499 Scale plan. A free tier covers 5,000 requests a month. Bright Data also sells proxies, a scraping browser, SERP APIs, and prebuilt datasets.

**Best for:** enterprise scraping where block rate and compliance review matter more than developer ergonomics.

### ScraperAPI

[ScraperAPI](https://www.scraperapi.com/pricing/) bills in credits: a standard page costs 1, Amazon 5, Google and Bing 25, and LinkedIn 30, with 10 extra credits when it bypasses Cloudflare, DataDome, or PerimeterX. Hobby costs $49 a month for 100,000 credits, and Startup costs $149 for 1 million. You can cap any request with `max_cost`.

**Best for:** small teams that want one proxy-and-render endpoint with predictable monthly billing.

### Zyte API

[Zyte](https://www.zyte.com/pricing/) prices each website in one of five difficulty tiers. On pay-as-you-go, HTTP responses cost $0.13 to $1.27 per 1,000 and browser-rendered pages $1.01 to $16.08, with lower rates at $100, $200, and $500 monthly commitments. You get $5 of free credit. Zyte maintains Scrapy, so it fits teams already running Scrapy spiders.

**Best for:** Python teams on Scrapy who want per-site pricing instead of flat credits.

### Apify

[Apify](https://apify.com/pricing) is a marketplace of prebuilt scrapers called Actors, plus the compute to run them. The free plan includes $5 of usage a month, Starter costs $19, and compute costs $0.20 per unit (1 GB of RAM for one hour) on Free and Starter. Its Website Content Crawler Actor is the most direct Firecrawl replacement in the store. See our [Apify vs. Parallel comparison](https://parallel.ai/articles/apify-vs-parallel).

**Best for:** site-specific scrapers you don’t want to build, such as marketplaces, maps, and social platforms.

## Open source and self-hosted

### Crawl4AI

[Crawl4AI](https://github.com/unclecode/crawl4ai) is an Apache-2.0 Python crawler that turns pages into LLM-ready markdown, with about 81,800 GitHub stars. Version 0.9.4 shipped on [PyPI](https://pypi.org/project/Crawl4AI/) on September 23, 2026. It runs on Playwright, supports LLM extraction with your own model, and ships a Docker image. Apache-2.0 is more permissive than Firecrawl’s AGPL-3.0, which matters if you embed and modify the crawler in a product. You run the browsers, proxies, and retries yourself. Our [Crawl4AI vs. Parallel comparison](https://parallel.ai/articles/crawl4ai-vs-parallel) goes deeper.

**Best for:** teams that want a permissive license and full control over the crawl.

### Firecrawl, self-hosted

If you like Firecrawl’s API but not the cloud bill, run it yourself. The [self-hosting guide](https://docs.firecrawl.dev/contributing/self-host) pins release v2.11.162 and keeps scrape, crawl, map, and search routes. Fire-engine anti-bot handling, screenshots, page actions, Agent, and Browser aren’t included, and LLM extraction needs your own OpenAI-compatible provider or Ollama.

### Jina Reader

[Jina Reader](https://jina.ai/reader/) converts a URL to markdown when you prepend `r.jina.ai/` to it. Without a key you get 20 requests a minute, and a free key raises that to 500 and comes with 10 million tokens. Billing counts output tokens. It reads PDFs and images, but it doesn’t crawl.

**Best for:** quick single-page reads in prototypes and scripts.

## If you need crawling

Crawling a whole site is the one Firecrawl job that search APIs mostly don’t cover. Tavily Crawl, Apify’s Website Content Crawler, Crawl4AI, and self-hosted Firecrawl all follow links across a domain. If your agent only needs the handful of pages relevant to a question, a search API with excerpts avoids the crawl entirely. Our explainer on [web crawling vs. web scraping](https://parallel.ai/articles/web-crawling-vs-web-scraping) covers the distinction.

## Switching Firecrawl search to Parallel Search

Firecrawl’s `query` maps to Parallel’s `search_queries`, and you add an `objective` that states what the agent is trying to learn. Firecrawl’s `limit` becomes `advanced_settings.max_results`. Where Firecrawl returns `data.web[].description`, Parallel returns `results[].excerpts`. We ran both requests on October 10, 2026. Here’s the Firecrawl call, sent keyless:

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.firecrawl.dev/v2/search \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"query": "firecrawl self-host docker compose", "limit": 3}'
```

It returned three results and `"creditsUsed": 2`. Here’s the Parallel equivalent:

```bash
curl https://api.parallel.ai/v1/search \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H "x-api-key: $PARALLEL_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "objective": "How to self-host Firecrawl with Docker Compose",
    "search_queries": ["firecrawl self-host docker compose"],
    "mode": "fast",
    "advanced_settings": {"max_results": 3}
  }'
```

The trimmed response:

```text
https://docs.firecrawl.dev/contributing/self-host.md | Self-hosting Firecrawl
https://github.com/firecrawl/firecrawl/blob/main/SELF_HOST.md | firecrawl/SELF_HOST.md at main
https://github.com/firecrawl/firecrawl/blob/main/docker-compose.yaml | docker-compose.yaml at main
usage: [{"name": "sku_search", "count": 1}]
```

If you passed `scrapeOptions` to get full markdown for each result, send those URLs to the Extract API instead. The [Firecrawl to Parallel migration guide](https://parallel.ai/articles/firecrawl-to-parallel-search-api) maps the remaining parameters.

## How to choose

- If your agent searches and reads, start with Parallel or Exa, and check whether excerpts remove your scrape step.
- If you crawl whole sites, use Tavily Crawl, Apify, Crawl4AI, or self-hosted Firecrawl.
- If target sites block you, price Bright Data, ScraperAPI, and Zyte on your own URL list, since each charges more for harder sites.
- If the license matters, Crawl4AI is Apache-2.0 and Firecrawl is AGPL-3.0.
- If you want a keyless MCP for prototyping, both Firecrawl and Parallel offer one.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best Firecrawl alternative?

It depends on the job. For agent search and page reading, Parallel and Exa return model-ready text from one API. For unblocking hard sites, Bright Data, ScraperAPI, and Zyte specialize in it, and for self-hosted crawling, Crawl4AI is the main open-source option.

### Is there an open source Firecrawl alternative?

Yes. Crawl4AI is an Apache-2.0 Python crawler that outputs LLM-ready markdown and runs on your own hardware. Firecrawl itself is open source under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted with Docker Compose, without some cloud features such as Fire-engine anti-bot handling.

### Is Firecrawl free?

Firecrawl’s free plan includes 1,000 credits a month with no card, enough for 500 searches or 1,000 scraped pages. Its keyless tier allows search, scrape, and parse without an account, under daily request and credit caps shared per IP address.

### How much does Firecrawl search cost compared to Parallel?

Firecrawl charges 2 credits per 10 search results, which works out to about $6.40 per 1,000 searches on the Hobby plan billed yearly and about $1.66 on Standard, by our arithmetic from its list prices. Parallel Search costs $1 per 1,000 requests on Turbo or Fast and $5 on Basic or Advanced, each with 10 results.

### Does Parallel have a crawl endpoint?

No. Parallel offers Search, Extract, Task, FindAll, Monitor, and Responses APIs, but no site crawler or map endpoint. Pair it with Crawl4AI, Apify, or Firecrawl if you need to follow links across a whole domain.
